Villawood Redevelopment Project

Welcome

Welcome to the Villawood Redevelopment Project. This website is designed to keep you up-to-date on the progress being made to upgrade the Villawood Immigration Detention Facility (VIDF).

Australia’s primary immigration detention facility is undergoing a major upgrade.

The Australian Government has committed $186.7 million to transform existing facilities into a place that better protects the security and privacy of people in detention, while maintaining appropriate security.

The project is being delivered jointly by the Department of Finance and Deregulation (DOFD) and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

The redevelopment responds to concerns raised by the Australian Human Rights Commission, about the current facilities at Villawood Immigration Detention Facility.

The redevelopment will include the construction of purpose-designed accommodation for people in detention.

The facility will be better for the local community—improving the visual appearance and the general amenity of the area.

Thank you to local residents, stakeholders, staff, people in detention and visitors who provided input to redevelopment plans during the consultation process in 2010.

The new facility’s design is now largely complete and incorporates feedback from stakeholders and the community.
